Virtues, the
That we practise infuse us with strength
February 4th 2013
You will certainly have noticed that if you are able to exercise wisdom, kindness, generosity and self-control for a time, you become better able to face the difficult situations you are presented with. You feel strengthened, as if you had received energies, as if a substance had been elaborated within you, a subtle fluid feeding the cells of your nervous system. And you are surprised. You wonder how it is that you are able to bear uncomplainingly inconveniences which previously made you angry or anxious or brought on nervous exhaustion.
That is why the wise encourage us to practise virtues. The morals they teach us are not intended to bully us but to strengthen us. From each victory we win over ourselves, we draw energy that allows us to progress.
