Every sensation, every emotion expends energy

The mere fact of thinking or talking burns up certain material elements in our body. And this is all the more true where emotions are concerned: a shock, a great sorrow or even a great joy is a combustion that produces ash and cinders. After such an emotion, we need to rest and sleep so that our organism has a chance to recuperate. Every manifestation, every sensation or emotion consumes both matter and energy.
This being so, how can men and women possibly imagine that when they come together in the effervescence of passion and sensuality, nothing is spent or lost? It is precisely in this kind of activity that the expenditure is greatest and recuperation is most difficult, for the quintessences they consume in this way are of a very subtle, spiritual nature, and in the long run, they lose all intelligence, refinement and beauty.*
