Like a great book; ‘in the beginning was the word’
October 4th 2011
When children are learning to read, they must begin by identifying the letters of the alphabet. Gradually, they start to recognize them in the words they encounter, until one day they manage to read whole sentences. In the same way, during initiation, disciples pass through numerous phases, during which they see the letters of the great cosmic book being drawn and assembled. These are the elements of creation.
When St John writes at the beginning of his Gospel, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… All things came into being through him,’ he means that in the beginning all the principles of the divine alphabet came into play. At all stages of creation, right down to the physical plane, these principles reproduced structures identical to those they had first created above. Everything on the physical plane can be considered as words, phrases, poems, all formed from the different elements of the Word.
